Returning to Creative Writing - Day 1

Red Bean Soup

Do I remember what to order?
We had descended from the high-rise
flat on Ma Tin Road
in Yuen Long, walked out to
the Big Street, it
was called Dai Ma Lo
I followed like a little sister
like so many times before,
at the sweet dessert parlor,
among many stalls parked illegally
in the alleyways
of Hong Kong,
drips of sweat drown
our foreheads as we unravel
the stools stacked in the corner
of the metal round tables,
a smidgin of mango pudding,
a drip of black sesame soup
left behind from the loud
crowds carousing after work,
as the clatter of bowls
are collected, and a hand mimicking
writing on the palm
as a notebook paper

calling out our order,
the waitress slips the paper
under the glass of the tabletop
as the condensation
begins to form as the humid
air gushes like a wind hitting against
the run-down air conditioner,
we took a leap to the outside
underneath the neon-imaged sky,
piping hot as I anticipate
all the pressures from our
days, it was our vision
for satisfaction
for one genuine moment,
contained in a bowl of
red bean soup.

Dedicated to my Cousin Joey, as her memory lives deep inside my mind and heart.

Remembrance of Auschwitz

Today marks 70 years since the Soviets liberated the concentration camps in Auschwitz. In my early years of teaching, I taught the Holocaust through the non-fiction novel 'Night' by Elie Wiesel to my Sophomores. I always wanted my students to learn that in the face of evil, the value of life and the disgrace of indifference teeter very precariously like a seesaw in human beings. Nothing excuses the act of cruelty. In learning its history, it might help us to never again repeat it, and to make sure indifference at its smallest level, in everyday life, never has a chance to flourish in our minds and towards another. Hope we continue to learn and teach The Holocaust.

Time

Time sits
at my lap
as still as a pet
when it jumps, I want to grab it
when it sleeps, I want to awaken it

by each minute of the hour
it disappears like a candle
blown out on a birthday cake
dark as the night
it creeps up so slowly
yet quickly

I want to toss it out
into the rubbish bins
and leave it alone,
will it does the same for me?

Time grips at the seconds
and grabs me by the arms
falling by the wayside
swinging til it rests
gently back on my lap.
It waits to
disappear again.

Bridges, Not Walls

Within 2 days, I snapped two iconic bridges of San Francisco. As we say in life, don't burn any bridges you'll regret. These majestic feats of engineering power emanates such beauty. It is true that the most beautiful things are located in our own backyards.

Happy Spring 2014!

Autumn Calls

Autumn Calls

Autumn called me back home
the whistles of the wind
brushed against my familiar
four-paned window,
the'Indian Summer' as it's known
in the Bay Area
coming on orange through dusk
til dawn, coming on strong
through peaches, pears, grapes
and pumpkins
it's been so long,
tasty & crispy like the air
inhaled and exhaled
some baseball cheers,
some jazz sensations trickled off
the minutes of the hour,
some Diana Krall, Nat King Cole
and some Miles Davis
soothing my restlessness
moving through my vortex,
slowly with the
harvest moon
it ushers in
opportunity,
ripe and organic
to be called
to be summoned
it does so with
magic, all in its
rhythm & rhyme,
thank you Autumn
thank you for your
call.

Bridges Not Walls

Today is the official opening of the East Span of the San Francisco- Oakland-Bay Bridge! It took 11 years for CalTran to complete this project, which became delayed and over-budget. The reason for this construction was because during the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake, a section of the eastern section's upper deck collapsed onto the lower deck and the bridge was closed for a month. In 2002, reconstruction of the eastern section of the bridge as a connector to a self-anchored suspension bridge began.

What's more is that the new bridge's bike and pedestrian path opened Tuesday, although it does not yet run the full length of the new span. The path was dedicated to the late Alex Zuckermann, founder of the East Bay Bicycle Coalition and the man credited for persuading Caltrans to build the path. The Bay Bridge is one of the longest bridge span in the world! I'm happy to witness this historical day and can't wait to take a ride and walk on it some day. I admire bridges for the huge engineering feats it took to create them, and yes, it connects Point A to B, but it also symbolizes human connections metaphorically. On any given day, I definitely appreciate bridges more than walls! :-)

Below are stunning pictures of the East Span, captured by San Francisco Gate, the online news website. Check it out!
