Hiking

During the week of June 15-19th, I was delighted to have spent time with my 7-year old niece Amanda. My sister called me and told me that Amanda had a
1-week gap between the end of her school year before the start of her summer program so she asked me to be her babysitter. I was excited to do it. I don't get to spend a lot of individual time with Amanda since our family gatherings are often big with my siblings and my other nieces. I think spending individual time is special and priceless. I tried to make the week as fun, relaxing and simple as possible.
So, I felt hiking was the perfect activity! I was introduced to hiking when I was
8 years old and loved it immediately.

For the entire week, we ended up hiking every morning follow by lunch, some computer and tv time, snack, and by 4:00pm, my other niece Perri got off from her summer program and came over to play. The sun was out early morning and it was the perfect time to get outside for fresh air and exercise. Amanda really loved it!

Amanda's a little girl who's full of energy. She loves doing cartwheels, the monkey bars, hoola hoop, and rope jumping. The hikes allowed her to be free to walk and run and explore her environment which is something instrumental in the development of a child. I was happy to see her just having simple fun. Nowadays, little children are thrown into society's rat race as if they were products and machines already. I am one who believes that a fun, happy and solid childhood is the foundation to a happy and healthy adult, and thus a life reflective of that.

During the hikes, I let Amanda carry my camera and take pictures of anything that struck her attention or imagination along the path. I think she took some great shots of squirrels, ducks, flowers, trees, a Chinese pagoda, a bridge, a waterfall, and even water sprinklers. I've collected the week's photos and created a few collages below. For a larger version, please click on collages. I hope Amanda will treasure these hiking days as part of her childhood to be fun and happy! I had a blast!! Thanks for reading!
