Every summer I would revise curriculum planning for the Fall school semester. This summer is completely a different one. In fact, I know this is one of those summers that will never come back again simply because I'll be back to teaching after graduate studies. I have made it a point to learn something every day this summer, avoid spending carelessly or doing things that do not serve my heart and brain.
This summer, I started off with attending the First Annual Youth Eco-Fest at Civic Center coordinated by a classmate, Candence. It was really cool, especially the sound stage, with students performing rap, and eco-friendly projects displayed throughout the area. I really enjoyed the youth community vibe of San Francisco of which I haven't been connected with since 2002.
One evening, I also had the opportunity to visit my friend Jill's CBO at Oakland call 'Poetry I Go' where I heard spoken word come alive through African American youth. I was mesmerized by their performances. I really had a great time!
And over the weekend, me, 2 classmates and a few new faces have come together to start an Education Seminar (on our own) at Berkeley. Our goal is to strengthen our pedagogy especially during the summer months when it could become rusty. We will do this without a formal classroom and professors. We met to discuss our agenda below and intend to commit to meeting every 2 weeks except the first 2 weeks of July. It is something that I have never done before so it would be interesting to explore something new. (Unfortunately, I could not commit to this endeavor as the summer progressed. Hope to stay in touch with the group members!) Happy Learning!
