One of the great things about San Francisco is the cafe culture which is a very European way of living in which people in town congregate over a cup of coffee, tea or dessert, sometimes great savory dishes, and exchange ideas and mingle among the local neighborhood and simply BE part of it. Of course, being raised in SF, that kind of cafe culture has rubbed off on me. One of my guilty pleasure is lounging at a cafe, sipping good hot tea, people watching or simply catching up with an old or new friend. In most transient and urban cities such as San Francisco, the need to connect and be where the locals hang out is a real daily joy. It reminds me of a village neighborhood in which culture, ideas and activities grow out of the people. I appreciate the cafe culture and find it so much part of me.
Here are some quotes about San Francisco's cafe culture that you may find interesting:
'San Francisco is a cafe kind of town. There are hundreds of them, catering to every walk of life.' ~ Chef Joey Altman
'San Francisco is no exception to the rule that there is something distinctive about every city that is a city. With its bohemian life, excellent cafes, bright lights and real people, SF is known in every corner of the United States and most parts of the world for its distinctive way of doing things, and particularly its way of enjoying life." ~ 15 January 1919 San Francisco Chronicle
'It has often been said that San Francisco is reminiscent of the great European cities. The cafe life here also gives many San Francisco neighborhoods the feel of an artist colony - where philosophy is discussed, art is inspired and music is played.' ~ Dean Deborah Berman SF Conservatory of Music
Here are some snapshots of that cafe day:

Final Quote:
To appreciate the cafe culture of San Francisco is to embrace what I refer to as 'Sip by Sip living' -- the slowing down and savoring of each moment.' ~ Barbara Graves, Minister of Commerce The Republic of Tea
