I graduated from SFSU on May 22, 2010. I wished I have more pictures to share, but I have lent my camera to my mom, who was on her 17-day trip to Europe! My sister Susan took some pictures, but she hasn't sent them to me yet. It was a magnificent day filled with joy and laughter. I rented my cap & gown in dark purple color, and a light blue hood. In every University, a Master degree in Education is indicated by a light blue hood. I now officially hold an M.Ed. (Master of Arts in Education)!!
That morning, my nieces, my sister Susan and Aunt Elaine and cousin Olivia attended my Graduation Breakfast hosted by the College of Education Department. They got to meet some of my professors. Of course, my advisor Dr. Lee was excited to meet my mom since I had acknowledged her in my Thesis, but unfortunately my mom wasn't around. It was a humorous exchange with Dr. Lee, who is and was one of the funniest and supportive professors I've ever had! And, to top it off, she was promoted to tenure this last semester of my grad. studies. I congratulated her and really felt as if I was in the company of true brilliance!
The day before my graduation ceremony, I had purchased some boxes of chocolates from See's Candies, each box was wrapped with a note: THANK YOU TEACHER!, and tied with a red ribbon and two caramel lollipops attached to them. I also bought smaller boxes in the shape of apples which symbolized 'TEACHERS.' I gave all my professors a gift as a gesture of my heartfelt gratitude to their wealth of knowledge and profound teaching. It felt so good to do that since I knew it was my very last day on campus! Finally, Dr. Hemphill, Associate Dean of the College of Education, approached me for a final chat. He is truly one of the best professors at SFSU. His classes really influenced me a ton, and I am indebted to his teaching of multi-disciplinary theories (e.g. Said, Bhabha, Gramsci, Foucoult, Freire, etc..) which have really made me re-think and unlearn so much of my own schooling process. He extended such compliments to me that I am flattered and grateful for the opportunity to cross paths with him in my graduate studies. It remains unbelievable to me!
I hope to post some pictures soon! But, that was the recap of my graduation day! I won't change anything at all. It has been a once-in-a lifetime experience! See you soon SFSU. Thanks for bestowing upon me all the 'degrees' I need to step into the world, but most of all, for nurturing the learner in me so that I can relate with the world more accurately and be an agent of change. Thanks for reading!
